What’s in Your Supplement?
The market size of the Vitamin & Supplemental Manufacturing Industry was $40.9 billion dollars in 2023. Let’s just take a breath to process, $40.9 billion. Seriously mind blowing!
The industry has exploded from 4,000 to 95,000 supplements on the shelf, in less than 30 years. With such massive growth, it’s surprising to learn there has been no major update to regulations. Consumers must advocate when it comes to product safety and efficacy.
I’m obessed with my daily supplement ritual. It’s completely part of my morning routine, but to be completely honest I have no idea what is in each tablet, where the ingredients are sourced from, or the efficacy of the product. Does it actually work once absorbed in my body? My only exception is the liquid collagen I take to support knee discomfort. Biocell liquid collagen has human clinical data, third party tested, and Sport my favorite varietal, has NSF certification. The rest who knows!? And this is scary. Do the supplements I consume contain heavy metals, talc (I can’t even), have proven efficacy, are they third party tested?
Skincare and cleaning products are becoming more transparent. Yes it’s slow but there has been meaningful change and as consumers we have better access to data to make informed decisions on the products we purchase. We absolutely have a right to know which ingredients are in the products we use, their safety and efficacy.
In our era of information, we know toxins cause damage to the body and endocrine disruptors cause havoc on our hormones creating adverse health affects. Interestingly, women’s health has historically been underrepresented and at times disregarded in clinical studies and research. This is slowly being corrected but it’s up to us, to be our own advocates, reclaim our power around our health and support companies that are trail blazers, forcing industries to change how they do business and become leaders in transparency, with formulation, safety and efficacy.
I listened to this podcast running errands during the week and I highly recommend. Ritual is an American supplement company, founded by Kat Schneider. Each ingredient in any of their supplements, is traceable, vegan, gluten and major allergen free, Non-GMO Project Verified, Made Traceable and Third Party Tested (for heavy metals & microbes). Yep, you read that correctly, every supplement. Ritual only works with companies that care as much about the supply chain as they do.
Vitamins Tailored for Women
But for me, it’s Rituals no B.S approach to unnecessary ingredients, with nutrients in their best form when they’re arrive in your gut. They list all their clinical studies on their website and they encourage you to look under the hood. Absolutely nothing to hide. Oh and did I mention FREE shipping, always……
I made my first purchase yesterday, a multivitamin and Melatonin which just happens to be the worlds first BioSeries technology designed to optimize melatonin release throughout the night to support a natural sleep-wake cycle. I shall report back. We all know how topsy turvey sleep is during Midlife.
Our health is absolutely, everything. Movement, Nutrition and Supplements are key to a healthy and fabulous Midlife & beyond. I challenge you today, start being curious about the supplements you take. Find out product ingredients, where do they come from and is there proof, it actually works. Remember it all starts with your month.
With so much love,
Jessica
